Avoid Firework Freak-Outs - Create a Spa Retreat for Your Canine Companion
Does your canine companion suffer from Fireworks Phobia? Consider creating a safe space to help your pup relax in a spa-like setting. We’ve got a few ideas for you to set up an oasis of serenity for your dog.
If your dog has a place she retreats to when nervous, make it nice and comfy. Something soft to lay on, and maybe an old t-shirt with your scent, might help her feel more relaxed.
Play calming music or sounds from Through a Dog’s Ear or use a noise machine to help cover the booming fireworks.
Use a scent or spray designed to comfort your dog. There are several options out there, such as Chill Pill and lavender sprays, that can be used. There is also a product called Adaptil that comes as a collar, a plug-in diffuser, and a spray that is designed to mimic certain pheromones released by nursing dogs for their puppies.
Stay home. If your dog is most comforted by your presence, skip the fireworks display and stay close for his benefit. Humming or speaking in low, soft tones might help his sense of well-being.
Give him a massage. Long, gentle strokes down your dog’s body can help him relax, if that is something he enjoys. Tellington Touch (or TTouch) is a simple, light massage technique that you can learn and is believed to reduce tension in many stressful situations.
Try an anxiety wrap, such as the Thundershirt. The Thundershirt and other similar wraps are designed to have a calming effect on dogs using gentle pressure, similar to swaddling an infant.
Make a food puzzle. Use a stuff able food toy and fill it with your dog’s favorite treats, freeze it, and have it ready for her to work on during the fireworks.
We hope you and your dog can enjoy Independence Day, no matter if fireworks are friend or foe. If your dog suffers severe anxiety during fireworks and/or thunderstorms, we recommend you contact us for a behavior modification plan, and to get in touch with a Veterinary Behaviorist who can help with treatment.
