From Chaos to Calm: Exiting the Vehicle

If your routine is to block and tackle your dog whenever you open your car door, I recommend following the training tips written below and in this video.

  1. Open the car door, feed your dog, and close the car door. Repeat this until your dog is no longer trying to rush out of the car. Try practicing this at their dinner time!

  2. Open the car door, feed your dog, grab the leash, and invite your dog outside of the car. Ask for attention as soon as your dog’s paws hit the ground. Feed your dog. Repeat until your dog automatically gives you attention without you asking for it.

  3. Be consistent and practice. Start in your driveway. Once your dog excels at this new skill at home, take this routine on the road! Practice in a park, then near a pet supply store, working up to the parking lot of the vet’s office.
