Muzzle Training
I believe all dogs should be trained to wear a muzzle using reward based training methods. Don’t think your dog would ever need to wear a muzzle? Here are three occasions when your dog may need to wear a muzzle.
The Veterinarian’s Office
Should your dog need to wear a muzzle at the vet’s office, it’s much kinder and gentler for all involved if you have already given your dog a positive association with the muzzle.
Evacuation
Should there ever be a weather or public safety-related evacuation, you’re unlikely to leave your dog behind. Evacuation to an unfamiliar location is stressful for everyone, including dogs. If your dog lashes out, a muzzle can prevent your dog from biting. Train your dog to wear a muzzle now, and put one in your dog’s Go Bag.
Cicadas and Street Meat
Prevent your dog from snacking on cicadas and bits mystery street meat with a muzzle. Have a dog who’s obsessed with rocks, mulch, rubber bands, and anything else he can find on his walks? A muzzle will take away the micromanagement and bring enjoyment back into your walks.
This VLOG gives you a muzzle training foundation. As stated in the video, I highly recommend the Muzzle Up Project. Please reach out to your veterinarian and trainer for muzzle training help!
