Have Any Pets Lived Here?
If you’re preparing your home for sale, your realtor may have told you to declutter and tuck away all of your pet’s stuff. You may be staging your home as if no pet has ever lived there. This is not an easy nor particularly fun chore. Don’t worry, we’re taking one more thing off your to-do list with the tips below. If you’re not selling your home but would like your home to survive muddy paw season, read on!
Muddy Paws
It’s muddy paw season, and we certainly don’t want muddy paw prints on the freshly cleaned carpets, floors, or furniture. Keep a towel and pet wipes by your front door to wipe off your dog’s paws as soon as they come inside. If your dog won’t stay still for a wipe down, keep a lickimat plus Churu paste or snuffle mat plus kibble by the door too. Toss some kibble into the snuffle mat or spread a Churu paste treat onto the lickimat. Giving your dog something to eat helps to keep your dog still while you wipe off her paws.
Bare Spots
Prevent your dog from tearing up your landscaping and leaving bare spots in your yard by letting them zoom in someone else’s yard: rent a Sniff Spot. Encourage your dog to get their zoomies out with zero guilt. Bring their friends along for a fun play date! Don’t forget to pack a towel and pet wipes so they don’t bring dirt into your car.
Hair of the Dog
Many dogs are shedding now. Make an appointment with a groomer for at least a de-shed and nail trim, if not the works. You can also brush your dog regularly outside, and leave your dog’s hair for the nesting birds. (Can you imagine those bird convos? “Our nest has Golden Retriever hair.” “Oh yeah? Well our nest has Corgi hair.”)
Cover your furniture with sheets. The sheets will block your furniture from the hairy haze and are easy to tuck away before an open house or private showing. This is also my go-to trick when staying at a dog-friendly rental property or hotel.
Showings
Refresh crate/carrier training with your pets for less stressful transportation. Purchase a low-sided rectangular plastic container with a lid to use as your portable litter box for the cat on-the-go.
Ask friends and neighbors if they don’t mind your pets hiding out with them during showings. Or, schedule dog walks during private showings.
Doggie daycare and boarding may be a good option. Make sure your dog is comfortable at daycare well in advance of your home entering the market.
As a last resort, pile everyone into the car and park in a garage to stay cool.
